Minimum Competencies - DCS

Stay Arcade

The following are general competencies expected of new and experienced players joining our community events.

If you have any doubts about being ready to fly, please reach out to any Roster member on our Discord server.

BROAD STROKES

  • Can you take off, fly, pickle the chosen ordnance, and land afterward?
  • Can you talk to us while you’re doing it?
  • Can you follow directions and generally be a mature human being?
  • Can you keep your lead in sight?
  • If so, you’re probably good. Read below for specifics.

GENERAL

  • Basic English Language skills - enough to understand commands and be able to call out threats, report status/location, etc.
  • Working speakers/headphones and microphone
  • Read assigned briefing materials before the event.
  • Familiar with DCS Server Browser and connecting to a multiplayer server. UOAF server info is posted in Discord during the event.
  • Steady internet connection good enough for online play.

SOFTWARE

  • Latest version of DCS Open Beta installed.
  • Latest (or compatible with latest) version of SRS installed and verified as functioning before the event (2-way communications and all keybindings working).
  • Discord installed, member of UOAF Discord, voice communication verified as functioning.

PILOT SKILLS

  • Basic competency with the airframe chosen on the signup sheet. At a minimum, you should be able to do the following in your aircraft:
  • Aircraft startup, if the mission has cold starts. (Auto-start is fine)
  • Taxi and take off.
  • Basic navigation to and from assigned targets.
  • Landing (visual).
  • Maintain loose formation (keep Flight/Element Lead in visual range).

Follow Flight/Element Lead instructions. Know how to employ the weapons assigned to your flight. Know how to set IFF codes in the SRS GUI or in the cockpit. Change radio channels to package, tower, intraflight, etc. and communicate with others through SRS while doing all of the above.

EVENT-SPECIFIC SKILLS Specific events may have additional technical proficiency requirements, to be outlined in the briefing document for that event. Some DCS missions have unique roles (such as GCI or Combined Arms) that have different requirements than the above. If you have questions regarding what is expected of you in these special slots, reach out to a Roster member attending the event and we’ll help you out.
