Flight Briefing

The baseline UOAF flight-level briefing checklist: what the flight lead needs to cover before the flight commits to 3D.

Learning Objectives

  1. Give a flight briefing.
  2. Share the important mission information the flight needs before stepping into 3D.

Checklist

### Flight Callsign

  • Cover the flight name, mission focus, aircraft type, and strength.
  • Example: Falcon1 OCA F-16C Block 30, four ship.

### Reiteration of Individual Intent

  • Restate the specific purpose of the flight and the general way it will accomplish the mission.
  • Example: Our intent is to destroy the runways of Wonson airbase with low-altitude dumb bombs.

### Loadout

  • Specify the ordnance and major stores each pilot will use.
  • Example: Each ship carries 6 BLU-109 runway buster high-drag dumb bombs, 2 370 gallon wing bags, 4 AIM-9P missiles, and a centerline jammer.

### Flight Plan

  • Walk the flight through the steerpoints, routing, cruising altitudes, and any special navigation details.
  • Example: Steerpoint 1 is home plate, Pusan airbase...

### Method of Attack

  • Explain exactly how the flight will execute the assigned task.
  • Example: We will go NOE at steer 6 and attack the runway in a pop-up attack from the east...

### Bingo

  • Cover fuel tolerances, joker and bingo states, and planned playtime.
  • Example: Bingo will be 3000 pounds, desired playtime is 10 minutes.

### Takeoff and Landing Procedures

  • Brief the taxi flow, takeoff profile, rejoin plan, and landing or recovery method.
  • Example: We will taxi in sequence to runway 14 left, and conduct 2-ship takeoffs. Takeoff will be timed by element leaders, full burn to 350, rotate at 180, nose up 10 degrees and rejoin before turning for steer 2.

### Communications

  • Confirm the flight-specific comms setup, frequencies, TACAN, and any required controls or presets.
  • Example: Flight comms will be on Victor 1, TACAN will be set 11X, 74Y, 74X, 11Y...
  • Use Communications and Brevity as the baseline for radio discipline and terminology.

### Questions from Element Lead

  • Take questions from the element lead before moving on.

### Questions from Wingmen

  • Take questions from the wingmen before ending the brief.
